AQA A-Level Biology · June 2023 · Q5b Describe how a non-competitive inhibitor affects the rate of enzyme activity. [4 marks] Enzyme S I Active site unchanged S = substrate · I = inhibitor Non-competitive inhibition: Inhibitor binds to allosteric site (NOT active site) This changes the tertiary structure of the enzyme Active site shape distorted → substrate can't fit Rate of reaction decreases — even with ↑ substrate conc. Key exam point: concentration of substrate has NO effect — this separates competitive vs non-competitive ✓ Rate vs [Substrate] [Substrate] Rate normal + inhib. Vmax Vmax↓ Student: The inhibitor binds to the allosteric site, changing the tertiary structure so the active site changes shape and substrate cannot bind 3/4 marks — add rate decreases even with ↑ [S] Mark scheme step ✓ AQA exam technique Next: draw inhibition graph A-Level Biology · Unit 2

Why Ascera

Structured support that earns marks

Most students don't struggle because they're not trying hard enough. They struggle because no one has shown them exactly what the examiner is looking for. Ascera tutors are trained to fix that.

01

Confidence, not just content

Most tutors teach the subject. Ascera teaches the student. Sessions are designed to build genuine understanding — so students feel in control walking into the exam, not just hoping for the best.

02

Honest progress tracking

Every few sessions, we take stock. What's improved, what still needs work, and where to focus next. Parents are always kept in the picture — no surprises come results day.

03

Built around each student

Every session is built around the student's specific gaps — their exam board, their target grade, where they're falling short. Before teaching begins, we identify exactly what needs to change and plan accordingly.

04

Patient, calm teaching

Students who struggle often feel embarrassed asking questions in class. Ascera sessions are a no-judgement space — questions are welcomed, mistakes are part of the process, and progress always follows.

Our tutors hold degrees from leading Russell Group universities — including:

How it works

Getting started is simple

Three straightforward steps from your first message to your first lesson.

01
Send an enquiryShare the student's subject, year group, exam board and target grade. No pressure — just a conversation.
02
Free consultation callA short call to understand the student's current position, which topics aren't landing, and where exam technique is letting them down. From there, a structured session plan is built around their specific gaps — before the first lesson begins.
03
Start making progressSessions begin with a clear plan tailored to the student. Progress comes quickly — targeted, exam-focused teaching that builds momentum from the first lesson.

Meet the founder

Hi, I'm Harsil

I founded Ascera Tutoring to offer something I wish I'd had when I was sitting these exams — structured, exam-focused teaching that cuts through the noise and helps students understand exactly what they're being tested on, and how to answer it.

Most tutoring is inconsistent and unfocused. Students get taught content they already know, by tutors who haven't read the mark scheme, with no clear plan. Ascera was built to do the opposite — a tutoring service with a defined methodology and tutors who know exactly what examiners are looking for.

FAQ

Common questions answered

How long are the sessions?+

Sessions are booked in 1 hour slots, up to a maximum of 2 hours per day. This keeps sessions focused and effective — extended cramming in a single sitting rarely produces better results than consistent weekly sessions.

Which exam boards do you cover?+

All major UK exam boards are covered — AQA, Edexcel, OCR, and others. Just let us know your exam board when you enquire and lessons will be tailored to your specific specification.

What does the free consultation involve?+

The free consultation is a short phone call to discuss the student — their current grade, target grade, exam board and any specific topics they're struggling with. It's a chance to make sure Ascera Tutoring is the right fit before any commitment is made.

How do I pay?+

Session frequency and scheduling are confirmed during your free consultation call. You can then choose to pay per session or in advance — whichever suits you. Payment is due by the Sunday before each lesson week. Bank transfer is accepted. No payment is required before your consultation call.

What if I need to cancel or reschedule?+

We require at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Cancellations made within 24 hours of the scheduled session will be charged in full. Full details are set out in our Terms and Conditions.

Are your tutors background checked?+

Yes. All Ascera tutors hold an Enhanced DBS certificate, which is renewed regularly. We take the safety and wellbeing of every student seriously, and full details are available on request.

What technology does my child need?+

Any device with a camera, microphone and a stable internet connection — a laptop, tablet or desktop. We use a shared interactive whiteboard so students can write, annotate and work through problems in real time. No special software needs to be installed in advance.

What is the minimum commitment?+

There is no minimum commitment for pay-per-session bookings — you can book individual lessons as needed. For the term plan, lessons are paid in advance for the full term. Most students see the best results with consistent weekly sessions, which we always recommend.

What happens if the tutor needs to cancel?+

In the rare event that a tutor needs to cancel, we will notify you as early as possible and reschedule at a time that works for you. If a suitable alternative time cannot be found, a full refund is issued for that session.
